We have heard of rubber bands, balls, boot, tires and even rubber playground floors; but how about rubber roofs? Actually, they really have been around for a long time. However, because they are a little on the unsightly side, they are usually only installed on flat rooftops. For this same reason, most people do not want to see them used on the very visible sections of their main roof. On the other hand, this roofing material does have many advantages.

For example, this product is available in pieces that are large enough to cover the average residential flat roof in one solid piece. The result is easy to figure out: there are no seams through which rain water can seep into the main structure. If a small hole does happen to appear, the average homeowner probably would be able to repair it very easily. Square rubber replacement pieces are readily available in most roofing supply stores. It is even possible to cover the entire surface with a liquid sealant that actually turns into a rubber like material when it dries; this in turn renders another layer of leak proof protection. Unnecessary walking on this material is typically not advised.

These roofs are frequently made from recycled products. They almost take care of themselves. The rain washes them in the spring and summer time. However, using a pointed snow rake or snow shovel could do some serious damage to this kind of material.

This substance can be punctured; sometimes without the homeowner even realizing it. Consequently, they should be routinely inspected for any sign of damage that may have occurred.
